Spring 2019: Media, Identity, and Culture

From music to television to film to social networking, most of us spend more time consuming and creating media than any other activity. Why does media take up so much of our day? What impact does media have on our culture and political life? How does the form of media impact its creation, dissemination, and reception? This course examines these questions and more by providing a foundational framework in media studies. We will look at television, film, radio, games, and social networks to understand how they impact our lives. We will hone in on how media intersects with power and difference, with a focus on racial, gender, and sexual identities. In short, the goal of this class is to attain media literacy.
